The Ultimate Self-Care Checklist: Tailored Just for You

You and your friends probably have your own favorite coffee drinks and TV shows. It makes sense that your ideal self-care checklist would look different too.

Maybe you love adult coloring books but they think that they’re boring. Maybe they want to check into a luxury hotel for a spa package, but you’d rather pitch a tent and go camping.

For self-care to work, it has to match your personality and lifestyle.

Try these suggestions for designing routines that reflect who you are.

Customizing your Checklist

You can find plenty of ideas about self-care by browsing through social media and magazines. It’s up to you to pick the ones that will nurture you.

Try these ideas:

Increase your awareness. How well do you know yourself? Observe your thoughts and explore your state of mind. Ask your family and friends for feedback.
Manage your time. Be realistic about what you can fit into your schedule. You may be able to free up more hours for yourself by waking up early and turning off your phone for a while each day.
Stick to your budget. Self-care doesn’t have to be expensive. Enjoy free activities like taking a walk or going to the park. On the other hand, there may be some things worth splurging on for you.
Listen to your feelings. Focus on your values and priorities, instead of keeping up with trends. It’s okay to skip green juice cleanses and putting charcoal in your toothpaste.

Pursue your passions. Incorporate the things you love into your routines. That might mean more dance parties or quiet time with a book.
Try new things. On the other hand, be open to expanding your interests. Experiment with some of the ideas you see on Instagram and ask your friends about what they do. You might be surprised to find out you like CrossFit or bubble baths.
Seek balance. Think about the areas you may be neglecting too. You might work out regularly but forget to stretch. You might pamper yourself at home but let stress pile up when you’re at the office.
Have fun. It’s great to apply your strengths to your “me time” but remember there are no grades. As long as origami amuses you, you’re the only one who has to know you were trying to make a frog.
Update as needed. Expect your self-care needs to vary over the years and even day by day. Change your plans whenever you need to.

Covering the Essentials

Each of us has some needs in common, even if we fulfill them in different ways. Make sure your self-care plan supports your overall wellbeing.

Consider these strategies:

Look after your body. Stay physically fit. Maintain a healthy body weight. Eat a nutritious diet with at least 5 servings of fruits and vegetables each day. Aim for 150 minutes of moderate exercise each week.
Protect your mental health. Treat yourself with kindness and compassion, especially during challenging times. Ask for help when you need it.
Be social. Build a strong network of support. Stay in touch with family and friends. Set healthy boundaries and talk about your feelings.
Grow spiritually. Think about your purpose in life. Give generously and connect with something larger than yourself. Join a faith community or practice your own beliefs.

You’re more likely to engage in self-care consistently if your checklist is tailored to your unique mind, body, and spirit. Making yourself a priority will bring you greater happiness and success and enable you to give more to others.
